During the year “Caritas-Spes Ukraine” organizes rest and rehabilitation rounds almost for 3000 children. Moreover the “Caritas” parish centers organize the rest for children in their region. Children, who are patronized by “Caritas-Spes”, pertain to the most exposed strata of the Ukrainian society. These children are from the territory suffered from Chernobyl disaster, orphans, children from incomplete and problematic families, and children-invalids. The rest for these children is organized at the centers listed below:

Child’s village “Jablunytca” (Ivano-Frankivsk region).

This health center is situated in a beautiful place in the highland of the Carpathian Mountains. 770 children have a rest here during a year. There are all conditions of getting complete physical renewal (since children live there in favorable ecological surroundings), restoration of health, and improvement of physical and spiritual state of children.

Center in Oleksandrivka (Zhytomyr region).

In the course of year 530 children rest on the recreational tours at the health camp that is a part of the “Caritas-Spes Oleksandrivka” charitable center. The “Oleksandrivka” center is situated in the picturesque place with beautiful nature. Favorable ecological factors and balanced food, also vitaminization courses and organism tempering – all these have positive effect on children’ physical state. Also saturated cultural, spiritual and educational programs promote their internal development.

Health camps “Nadija” and “Melody” (Zarichany, near Zhytomyr).

These camps are situated in a wonderful place on the side of river Teteriv in a pine forest. Children had a rest in it only in summer. These camps during summer receives 900 children. These children who have a rest there have an opportunity to spend o lot of time out of doors, swim in the river and become brown. Sisters and priests, who work at the camp, together with mentors, who come with children, organize interesting and saturated cultural program.

Maritime climate, steppe air, curative mud, health-giving mineral water – all these factors are combined in Berdiansk. Thanks to this, children, who rest in this camp, have a chance to swim every day in the warm sea (so-called Berdiansk spit), reasonably become sunburnt and have a sunbath under the shade. The family-type homes for orphans.

The Caritas-Spes center organizes and leads family-type homes for children. Orphans and children who don’t have parents’ care permanently live there.
Children are educated by sisters-nuns and specialy grounded educators. Children live in such homes till their full age, go to secondary school, go to kindergartens, receive good education. But the most important thing is that they receive love which they didn’t have even when they had parents.
In December 2006 Caritas-Spes received a new solid partner in the project Family homes. It is an Austrian non-profit organization Kleine Herzen or Little Hearts in English with Pascale Vayer as its founder and leader. The main goal of Kleine Herzen is to support the children from economically weak countries and especially those from the former Soviet Union. In Ukraine Kleine Herzen develops a network of adoption-at- distance, a program of individual help for orphans and supports Family Homes. Kleine Herzen takes care of already 6 Family Homes in Ukraine.

The House of St. Joseph for orphans in Kyiv. It began its work in the summer of 2001 and is fitted for 12 children. 8 children of the age from 5 to 14 live in it now. Five children go to school and three go to kindergarten. The FTHFCH of “The Burger’s family”(it was renamed from “Philip Neri”) works in Mukachevo – 10 children of the age from 1 to 13 years old (2 of them are their own children and 8 others were taken to the family). 7 children go to school. A young couple takes for them the place of parents and educators. The house was established in 2002. During this time it has been financed with the help of contributions from Australia, the “Vira” fund in Zakarpathia (Hungary), the fund of the Franciscan Mission in Zakarpathia (Hungary). A few families from Hungary also give their assistance. State assistance is being expected since 2006.
The FTHFCH of “St. Havryil” works in Velyki Bereznui (11 children) and the FTHFCH of “The Queen of Peace” (7 children). In the first house the manager of the local Caritas center is the mother and educator at the same time and a sister-nun from Slovakia works as an educator in the other house. The first house was established in 2000 and the second a little later. They are financed by the Caritas-Czechia.

Kindergartens.

General economic crisis in the country has totally negativ influence over children. Almost always parents take their children under school age to kindergartens. But now according to the economic crisis the government doesn’t allocate enough money for maintenance of kindergartens. That’s why most of them are in bad financial state.
One of the ways of solving this problem is taking over the patronage the own kindregartens of the Caritas and the kindergartens in the cities where the Caritas-Spes centers work. Education in these kindergartens is held in the spirit of the religion. Such kindergartens are in much better conditions than the similar state establishments throughout the country. Here is the list of the kindergartens that receive assistance from the charitable mission Caritas-Spes.

Kindergartens at the “Quo Vadis” Caritas-Spes-Berdiansk center (Zaporizhia region).
Caritas-Spes Kindergarten in Dniprodzerzhynsk for the children from indignant families (Dnipropetrovsk region).

With the help of the manager of the nursery school and the head of the village the nursery school works in the spirit of Catholic conditions. The Caritas supports all the mentioned nursery schools mainly with the help of the Fund of the Franciscan Mission in Zakarpathia and Franziskaner für Mittel und Osteuropa, Wien.

Reconstruction of the children camps.

New camp Now the new sleeping building that has three storeys instead of the old with only one storey is being built. The new building is designed for 80 children. The heating system is planned to be started in the health center. So recreation and restoration of children’s health could be held during the whole year.
Construction of the new building is coming to an end: we only have to assemble a part of electrofittings, assemble sanitary engineering equipment and to furnish children’s lounges. Heating is also planned to be started in the kitchen-dining-room. For this purpose a boiler room should be refited. Two new boilers should be bought and connected up with the heating system of the camp. Gas pipeline is being laid on to the camp in order to convert the heating systeme in the health camp into the natural gas.

Camp in Jablunitsa Total reconstruction of wooden houses for children is being held in the camp. Foundation is being produced and the walls are being underwalled in order to make the houses higher and more spacious. After that the old houses are being displaced on the brickwork with the help of the special accessory equipment. Upholstery of the houses is being changed both on outside and on the inside. Roofs and floors are also being completely changed. Reconstructed houses will not deteriorate so quickly because their wooden construction is already raised from the ground and protected from the influence of the moisture. The renewed outward look of the houses will make children’s recreation more pleasant. At the moment three wooden houses have been already reconstructed, the others are next in turn; on the whole there are 20 such houses in the camp.

Everyone who is interested in the project of reconstruction of the health centers for children’s recreation can join the cause of assistance to children. We need money for futher reconstruction of the health centers in order to continue our building. The Caritas-Spes organization will be grateful for any assistance. Your money will be directed only on the assistance to the children to improve the conditions of their recreation.

Houses of mercy for elderly peoples.

How to make people feel happy in their old age? Family relations are very important for the elderly person. They give a feeling of protection and necessity to this world bringing gladness, unpleasantness and troubles to the pensioner. First of all they want to share their experience. But to their high regret it doesn’t interest anybody. In our modern society a social role of elderly people seems to be “crossed out from the scenario”. That’s why elderly people can’t take part in the life of the youth – their experience including human intercourse has become out of date. And the most unpleasant thing is that nobody wants to listen to an old person. But considering all their experience a lot of elderly people are almost helpless. Sometimes they can’t even take care of themselves. Experts consider that elderly people don’t need much for quiet and good life. They only need to have their own dwelling (even if it’s a separate room), connection with the world around and meetings and contacts with relatives and neighbours. There was organized work of two houses for elderly people under the guidance of the Caritas-Spes. The workers of Caritas take care of the inhabitants of these houses. Apart from elderly people disabled people also live there.

The House of Mercy for lonely, disabled and sick people is attached to the Caritas-Spes-Gorodok Center. They are mainly elderly people. The House was build with the help of f. Vladyslav Vanagsa MIC. One more house was build later with the help of the western charitable foundations: the Caritas Poland, Renovabis, Kirche in Not. Building of the house for elderly people in Gorodok was finished in 2000.
43 persons live today in the House of Mercy. All people who live in this house have constant care, daily medical examination and eat three times a day. There is a chapel in which Holy Service is performed; all inhabitants approach to the Sacrament of Confession on every first Friday of the month. The sisters-nuns from the Society of Sisters-Maids of Pure Mary who came from Dembice (Poland) have been working in the House of Mercy since 2002. The staff of the House consists of 6 nurses, 5 kitchen workers, hospital nurse, drivers, accountant, economy manager, laundress, joiner and baker.
There is no need to look for people to live in this house because there are many persons who desire to live here. The lonely people who don’t have any care are taken first of all. Everybody who live here have provided care till death, these people are fed, taken care of, treated and buried after their death. There is a center of dispensation of humanitarian aid for indigent people. There is a rest-room in the House of Mercy. So everyone can come here to have a chat and a nice time and to watch TV. Thanks to the well-equipped kitchen dispensation of free hot dinners for the pensioners from Gorodok who don’t live in our house and free dinners for the orphans and children from indigent families is possible.
There is St. Elizabeth’s House of Mercy in the Oleksandrivka village, Zhytomyr region. There are 10 elderly people in the House of Mercy (the oldest resident is 89 years old). The average age is 60-70 years. Two sisters of mercy serve these people. There is a dining-room in the “Oleksandrivka” center. Here work kitchen workers who cook for the residents of this house.

Care for elderly people.

The main problem that faces elderly people – is isolation from society. It is expressed by loneliness of such people, they have nobody to take care of them, to help them by household and to bye food. Fost of them suffer from the lack of the usual human communication. That is why the help of volunteers, social workers and nurses who visit them is so necessary for these people. According to the people’s references they need it very much. So one of he womens said that she got so accustomed to the Caritas workers that would like even to change her dwelling in order to live nearer to the Center where the Caritas volunteers work.

With the help of the local centers Caritas-Spes takes care of lonely and sick elderly people, visiting their homes:

Realization of the project “Home visiting of lonely people” was begun in September 2005. We have a group of 30 lonely persons. 5 volunteers take care of them and the sister-nun who has a nurse certificate leads the volunteers.
The Social-Pastor center of Joan Pawlo II (Kyiv). Homes of 50 persons are visited. During last year we gave assistance (clothes, footwear, medicine and service of hairdressers, barber and jurist) to nearly 3 thousand of people.
Home visiting of sick and lonely people (in Berdychiv). 2 workers of the Caritas-Spes-Berdychiv center and 4 volunteers are involved in execution of this project. 35 persons received the assistance in 2005 year. Among them there are 23 lonely and sick elderly people, 7 persons who have relatives but all in all are seriously ill, 5 persons are seriously ill and bed-ridden. These people get food, help with room cleaning and with food and medicine buying.
The project: “Home visiting” works in Drogobych (Lviv region). 30 elderly persons who need outside assistance are served. Realization of the project “Home visiting” was begun in October 2005. The project provides care for 40 lonely elderly people and handicapped persons. Some persons need a special care.
In Sambir the Sisters of Mary’s family take care of sick and lonely people. All in all 150 persons are taken care of. In Kolomyia the Sisters Urshulanky take care of sick – dispence medicine and clothes.
In Kosiv the Sisters Felicianky come to the assistance of sick and lonely people and help children in the children’s resthouse.
In Yavoriv the Sisters of St. Dorota succour the sick at home.
Home visiting of sick people in Odesa. 40 elderly people are taken care of.
In Kharkiv homes of 30 lonely elderly people are visited.

Social assistance.

The project “Children invalids” has been working in Bar town. It provides constant care for 50 persons from 7 to 17 years old. The project works since 2000 year. Regular meetings “In the Circle of Friends”, chess and draughts tournaments, film review, puppet play, organization of excursions, home visiting of the children who have problems with moving, dispensation of humanitarian aid – here are the main trends of work in the framework of this project. Volunteers, methodologists and members of the “Mercy” circle of the center of extra-scholastic work with children and teenagers of the district education department, RKP of St. Anna help us to realize this project.

There is a social office in Kharkiv. On the average 15 persons have consultations there during a day. The office works five times a week.
Social services work with the help of the Kyiv social center for the people who are taken care of. 1300 visits have been made during 2005 year (food and cloths delivery, tiding up of homes and visiting of patients in the hospital). There is a laundry at the social center. People who come to the center are served here. Visitors can also take a shower. We can give humanitarian aid by post. Delivery of humanitarian aid to other cities of Ukraine is also possible due to the applications of those who are in need.
A center of social assistance in Stryi has already begun its activity. 5 workers work there.

return

Local projects.

Depending on geographical location of each separate Caritas center arises the necessity of realization of specific kinds of projects that will solve the problems of just that region.

Drogobych. Social and legal assistance for refugees is provided.
During 2005 year 34 persons appealed to the Center office in Kyiv for help and got it, 21 of them got pecuniary aid.
Induvidual assistance for treatment of a few persons is given periodically in Berdiansk.

Small enterprises.

We are aimed at creation of small enterprises and establishments which can give assistance. This will give an opportunity to create new working places and provide with work all people who are in need. Apart from this, a aprt of profits from this activity will be directed to the Caritas activity. For example, a joiner’s shop is working in Khmelnycki. A father of the family which has eight children has received a machine for production of wire-net. Baking of bread-stuffs was begun in Orativ. We are looking for an opportunity to create such bakery in Gvardiiske and to buy a combine and other agricultural equipment for farmers. We also help people to get necessary knowledge and experience in order to run their own business: training for bakers and people who carry on greenhouse farm was organized in Poland.

A bakery in Seredne (Zacarpathian region) works. 20 breads are brought every day to the free dining-room in Mukachevo. Sisters-nuns also take care of the poor in Seredne bringing and giving out bread from this bakery. The other batch are offered for sale.
A room of the former bath-house with the total area of 292 square metres was bought in Orativ (Khmelnycki region). The room is being rebuild and re-equipped into a bakery. Baking of bread has already begun. A baking machine was taken on credit.
